About

Mirza Muhammad Murad Bakhsh (born: 1624; died: 1661) was the youngest brother of Emperor Aurangzeb and a son of Shah Jahan. The four sons of Shah Jahan all held governorships during their father's reign. He was appointed Subedar of Multan in the year 1642. His departure for an expedition to Agra in 1646 caused his relationship with Shah Jahan to worsen. He and the Emperor afterwards developed a lasting separation, which led to his banishment from the Mughal court. He continued to serve as Gujarat's governor.

The rivalry of the brothers – Dara Shikoh, Aurangzeb, Shuja and Murad – broke out into open conflict in November 1657, when Shah Jahan fell ill. Prince Murad then declared himself the Badshah and struck coins in his name from Gujrat. Shuja did the same in Bengal of which he was the governor. Murad was persuaded by Aurangzeb to join forces and partition the empire. Murad Bakhsh and Aurangzeb cooperated to defeat Shah Jahan's oldest son Dara Shikoh during the battle of Samugarh.

After emerging victorious, Aurangzeb, in July of 1658 imprisoned Murad Bakhsh and sent him to prison. After serving three years in captivity, he was executed in Gwalior Fort on December 14, 1661. Aurangzeb was the unquestioned ruler of the Mughal Empire since he had killed all brothers.[i]

The coin

The coin, not surprisingly, follows the format of the Shah Jahan ‘quadrant’ style rupees. It features Murad Bakhsh’s name and title on the obverse and the Kalima Shahada along with the names of the four orthodox Caliphs on the reverse.

The coin also makes use of the Ilahi era established by Akbar. It mentions the month of Azar, which corresponds to November-December in the Gregorian calendar.

This coin was minted at Surat, which was under the control of Murad Bakhsh at the time as he was the governor of Gujarat. Other coins of his were minted at Ahmedabad and Khambayat (Khambhat).[ii]
